New Zero Art Space

In 1990, the group of artists named “Modern Art 90” was organized by the modern artists in Myanmar. And the group exhibitions were happened from 1990 through 2000. In year 2000, the name of the group was changed to “New Zero” and the activities were continuously happening by the name New Zero Art Group until 2008. The group of the artists organized an exhibition by contributing their paintings for the purpose to found a space from the selling of the paintings. In that way, “New Zero Art Space” was founded in 2008 and started as non-profit independent art space. In 2009 – 2012, New Zero Art Studio was active. But when the renting prices are getting higher in 2012, New Zero Art Space is organized as only one space that include Library, Residence, Studio and Exhibition space. Art books, magazines, DVD and literature books are available in the library. It was and still a place for the artists to create their art works very freely. And it is a place that enough encourage young generation artists in Myanmar. For that reason, New Zero Art Space always sends and recommends several young artists for their art study, exchange program, residency and the art events abroad since New Zero is connected widely with the several art spaces, institutions, universities and art organizations all around the world.

New Zero especially focuses on contemporary art trend and is providing the educational platform by yearly free of charge art classes for the children and adult started since 2009. At the end of each art class, the exhibitions of the students are holding till today. New Zero Art Space have already provided eight children art classes, five mobile child art classes at the monasteries, orphanage centers, centers for the children living with HIV in Yangon and eight classes for the adults. Exhibitions, Art talks, Seminars, Workshops, Exchange Programs and the Training programs were included as routine activities of the space. The first Japan – Myanmar Performance Art Exchange was held by New Zero in 2001 and again in 2005 and 2009. By collaboration with NIPAF [Nippon International Performance Art Festival], the performance art exchanges were active till 2014. The “Artist in Residence” program has started in 2011 till now by receiving proposals from the artists all around the world. From 2010 – 2011, the program was funded by the Prince Clause Funds and the accepted artist can be supported for the air ticket, accommodation, artists fee and working space. After 2011, the residency program is still running, but New Zero can only provide a place to stay and work. The ASEAN Contemporary Art Exchanges were hosted and organized by New Zero Art Space in 2009 and 2012. The ASEAN Contemporary Art Exchange Program in 2012 was included curatorial exchange program for the first time in Myanmar. “The International Multimedia Art Festival” by involving about 35 artists from abroad and nearly 50 Myanmar artists has been done by New Zero in 2012. The festival included the two-day symposium and was displaying Video Art, Sound Art, Photo Art, Installation, Sculpture, Painting and live performances.

Team of New Zero Art space also move for community activities since it was organized in 2008. That was also the time that Cyclone Nargis hit and destroyed the northern part of Myanmar and over ten thousands people were killed. New Zero also went for the donation to some places where Cyclone destroyed. In 2012, “The Charity Art Fair for People Living with HIV/ AIDS” supported by the British Council had been held and tall the money from art fair donated to the HIV/ AIDS effected children and the HIV/ AIDS care centers and the hospitals. The main reason of the art fair is not just only to raise fund for charity but also aim to promote audience integrity by going to the public area.

From 2014 – 2016, “From Craft to Art: Community based Art Development Project” was active by New Zero Art Space, the British Council [Myanmar] and SDC [Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Embassy of Switzerland] with the objectives to encourage Myanmar craft society and to approach contemporary art practices among the public through crafts.

“New Zero Art Village” was founded in 2015 in PaneNaeGone Village in Hmaw Be. At the same time “New Zero Village Art School” was founded there in the art village supported by KDDI Foundation in Japan collaborating with New Zero Art Space. The main objectives of the school is to encourage the education of the children and youth in the village and the school is running the whole year mainly with the Art Classes, Computer Study Classes, English Study Classes for the adult, youth and the children. There are also some other activities and the programs occasionally such as storytelling and theater sections.

The above was the brief about New Zero Art Space. The main objectives of New Zero are to encourage Myanmar Contemporary Art Society and to lift up the young generation artists for the future art world of Myanmar.
